You can fingerspell the sign language alphabet. Certain words - such as names of places - are spelt out on the fingers.
Two tips to get you started:
1. When learning the alphabet try to remember the the vowels are your five fingers - a, e, i, o, u - very useful for 'Old McDonald Had a Farm...!
2. If you are right handed - your left hand becomes your "painters palette" and your right hand moves on the left hand to spell the letters of the alphabet.
